Behind every great support program are the people who show up each day to make independence possible. Direct Support Professionals — or DSPs — are at the heart of what we do at Shema Healthcare.
What does a DSP do?
A Direct Support Professional provides hands-on, day-to-day assistance that helps individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities live, work, and participate in their communities. No two days look exactly alike, because support is always tailored to the individual. A DSP might:
- Support daily routines such as cooking, personal care, and household tasks;
- Encourage skill-building that promotes greater independence;
- Help individuals get to work, appointments, and community activities;
- Foster friendships and meaningful community connections; and
- Advocate for each person’s choices, preferences, and dignity.
The qualities that matter most
Great DSPs are patient, dependable, and genuinely compassionate. While experience is helpful, the most important qualities are a caring attitude and a commitment to treating every individual with respect. Training and professional development build the rest.
A career with purpose
Being a DSP is more than a job — it’s a chance to make a real difference in someone’s life every single day. If you’re looking for meaningful work and a supportive team, we’d love to hear from you. Visit our Careers page to learn about current opportunities at Shema Healthcare.
